Description:
Techniques Course Overview
This module of iap2’s Foundations in Effective Public Participation program introduces a range of practical engagement tools and techniques. You will explore technique options for each spectrum level, online techniques, and in-person techniques that can be taken online for engaging in a virtual setting.
The module includes overviews of more than 50 tools and techniques tested and used by public participation practitioners around the globe. The course is a techniques overview and is suitable for beginning-to-intermediate level practitioners and those who want a review of basic group process techniques. We use interactive exercises, and practical tips, supplemented by current videos and media clips, to enliven the basic theory and reference materials and to reinforce skills that participants can put to immediate use.
Participants learn how to create effective forums for dialogue and how to avoid the many problems encountered in traditional public meetings. Participants leave this module armed with a detailed student manual and a packet of iap2 tip sheets offering practical advice for selecting, using and evaluating a broad range of public participation activities.
Techniques for Effective Public Participation develops awareness, knowledge and skill in public participation by providing you with the following:
- An overview of the range of techniques that are effective in public participation, and simulations of several of those that participants believe would be useful for their needs – build skills in using P2 techniques
- A four-step process that facilitates technique(s) selection to support your planned P2 objectives, plus addresses the needs of the publics, the decision-maker and the decision – build skills and acquire tools to build successful public participation events and programs
- Case studies and practical hands-on exercises, with opportunities to discuss and apply best practices in a variety of small- and whole-group settings to suit your learning needs – support skill development and build practitioner confidence
- Coaching and feedback opportunities – encourage analysis and self-reflection for ongoing professional growth and skill enhancement
- A positive, dynamic learning environment – enjoy and learn in a collegial environment that supports full engagement by trainers and participants alike
